Perhaps the world's most famous tourist, Alan Wicker, was once asked if he could only ever visit one place on the planet, where would it be. Without hesitation he said the answer is two places, luckily they are next to each other. His favourite man-made place on earth is the temple to a hedonistic extreme, Las Vegas his favourite natural attraction in the world is the awe inspiring Grand Canyon.
As you approach Las Vegas after dark either by car or by plane its mass of neon lights shines out for hundreds of miles into the desert. Seeing the glow of the city from afar when heading towards it by car is truly a remarkable sight.
Once in the city the amount of activities available is mind-boggling, Las Vegas is not only the undisputed world Casino King it is also a place of incredible family and adult entertainment.
Each of the giant hotels with their thousands of rooms also offers an incredible array of paid for and free entertainment going on around the clock. Even if you never gamble one dollar in the city's millions of slot machines you will still find an incredible amount to see and do in and around the exciting casino complexes.
You should always be able to find a hotel room as long as one of the world's major sporting events is not being played out in the city at the time. On just one corner where the MGM Grand, New York New York, and Excalibur hotels sit, there are well over 30,000 rooms available.
The pleasurable extremes of Las Vegas are hard to tear yourself away from, but if you can manage to drag yourself away from 24 hour, poker tournaments, the areas around the city have a multitude of sites and experiences to share.
You can hire a car and drive out the short distance to the astonishing Grand Canyon. No amount of TV documentaries or glossy magazine photos can possibly prepare you for the awesome grandeur and huge vistas of this spectacular hole in the world. A flight over the canyon is a spectacular highlight for any Las Vegas holiday.
Also high on the list of attractions just outside the city is the magnificent Hoover Dam, looking at this huge 220 meter high, 370 meter wide wall of concrete and steel it is incredible to comprehend the massive amounts of water that this amazing structure holds back.
The man made Lake Mead that the dam created took over six years to fill up to its 180 meter depth produces a body of water of 250 square miles which is 110 miles long. This is now a playground for water sports and water activities for those wanting to escape the heat of Las Vegas.
